Thumbnl vs Canva for YouTube thumbnails: automatic from your video, or designed by hand from a template.
Short version: Canva is a full design editor with a free plan, over a million thumbnail templates and tools for every other kind of graphic. You grab a frame yourself, upload it and design. Thumbnl does one job: from your video file it picks the frame, cuts out the subject and builds three finished thumbnails in 16:9 and 9:16, scored at feed size, in about ten seconds. If you enjoy designing or need a free tool, Canva wins. If you want the thumbnail done from the video without opening an editor, that is what Thumbnl is for.
This page is written by Thumbnl, so read it knowing that. Everything about Canva below comes from Canva's own pages (canva.com/pricing and canva.com/create/youtube-thumbnails) as they read on September 28, 2026, in US dollars. Prices vary by country and change; check their site.

When Canva is the better choice
- You want it free. Canva Free costs nothing. Thumbnl has no ongoing free tier, only a free first video.
- You like to design. Canva gives you every layer, font and element. Thumbnl chooses the layout for you; you adjust, you do not draw.
- You make more than thumbnails. Banners, logos, intros, social posts: Canva does all of it. Thumbnl does thumbnails only.
- Your thumbnail is not a frame from the video. Graphics, text-only designs or stock photos are easier in Canva.
- Price per year. Canva Pro at US$144 a year costs less than Thumbnl Creator at $279 a year.
- A team designing together. Canva has real-time collaboration and comments.
When Thumbnl is the better choice
- You want the thumbnail done from the video, fast. No exporting a still, no template hunting: drop the video, get three finished designs in about ten seconds.
- You need both sizes. Every design comes in 16:9 for regular videos and 9:16 for Shorts in the same pass.
- You want to know it reads small. Each design is scored at about 200 by 113 pixels, the size of a phone feed, with specific fixes.
- You want three real options for Test and Compare. Three different designs from the same moment, ready for YouTube's built-in test.
Can you use both?
Yes. Build the three in Thumbnl, then take the one you like into Canva for any hand-finishing. And any thumbnail made in Canva can be checked at feed size with the free checker.
