Thumbmagic alternative: two tools that start from your video, and how to choose.
Short version: Thumbmagic and Thumbnl are close cousins. Both take your video and make thumbnails from it. Thumbmagic is cheaper per thumbnail, takes a YouTube link or a script as well as a file, has templates, AI expression edits and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Thumbnl uses only real frames with nothing generated or changed, gives every design in both YouTube and Shorts sizes at full HD, and scores each one at phone feed size. For a lot of people Thumbmagic will be the better buy; this page tries to show which one you are.
This page is written by Thumbnl, so read it knowing that. Everything about other tools below comes from their own pages as they read on October 1, 2026, listed under Sources. Prices and features change; check their site before you buy.
What Thumbmagic does, in its own words
- Inputs. "Paste a YouTube URL", upload a video ("MP4, MOV, AVI, and WEBM. Files up to 5GB"), or give "at least 100 characters of your script".
- How it works. It "extracts key frames, identifies faces, and generates thumbnails based on your content", with "15+ layout styles" and templates.
- Edits. You can "adjust text, colors, backgrounds, or expressions", and its site lists an Expression Changer.
- Output. "1280x720 pixels (16:9)" for standard videos, with 9:16 available for short-form. Each generation uses 1 credit and "produces 2 variants".
- Price. Starter $17 a month for 100 thumbnails a month, Pro $35 for 500, Business $59 for unlimited, each billed yearly. "3 free thumbnails. No credit card required." "30-day money-back guarantee." The pricing page we read showed yearly billing; check it for month-to-month prices.
- Owner. Its pricing link goes to app.submagic.co, and its pages present it as part of Submagic.

When Thumbmagic is the better choice
- Price per thumbnail. Starter's 100 thumbnails a month at $17 billed yearly gives more thumbnails per dollar than Thumbnl.
- You only have a YouTube link, or only a script. Thumbnl needs the video file.
- You want a refund window. Thumbmagic offers 30 days money back. Thumbnl does not refund; it gives the first video free instead.
- You want templates or to change an expression. Thumbnl has 11 looks of its own and no templates, and it never changes a face.
When Thumbnl is the better choice
- You want nothing changed or generated. What the viewer sees on the thumbnail is the exact frame they will see in the video.
- Shorts and long videos from the same upload. Every design arrives in both sizes, full HD.
- You want to know how it reads small. Each design is scored at about 200 by 113 pixels, the size a phone feed shows it, before you download.
- Odd formats. MKV, AVI, WMV, ProRes MOV, HEVC, MPEG-TS and 3GP are read on the server when your browser cannot play them.
