Free YouTube thumbnail makers, and an honest note: Thumbnl is not one of them.
Short version: you can make a good YouTube thumbnail for nothing. YouTube itself offers frames from your video, and free editors like Adobe Express, Photopea and GIMP cover the rest. Thumbnl is a paid tool. What it gives free is a try on the home page without signing in, your first video (watermarked, both sizes to download) and the thumbnail checker at /check. If you post now and then, the free route below is enough. Paying starts to make sense when thumbnails eat real hours every week.
This page is written by Thumbnl, so read it knowing that. Everything about other tools below comes from their own pages as they read on October 1, 2026, listed under Sources. Prices and features change; check their site before you buy.
Free options that are really free
- YouTube's own options. When you upload, YouTube lets you "choose from auto generated suggested options", frames from your video. Uploading your own custom thumbnail needs a verified account. Custom thumbnails for Shorts can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Adobe Express (free plan). Adobe says the free plan includes "core features like photo editing tools and effects and thousands of free templates", with 1280x720 as the YouTube thumbnail default. The page we read did not say whether its background remover is free or Premium.
- Photopea. A photo editor that runs in the browser, opens and saves PSD files, and says "Enjoy all the premium features without spending a dime."
- GIMP. Free, open source software for Linux, macOS and Windows. A download, not a browser app.
- Canva. Canva refused our page fetches on October 1, 2026, so we cannot quote it today. Our Thumbnl vs Canva page has its plans as read on September 28, 2026.
Free trials (free to start, not free to keep)
- Thumbmagic: "3 free thumbnails. No credit card required." Paid plans from $17 a month billed yearly.
- Pikzels: offers a free trial; the trial terms were not stated on the pages we read. Paid plans from $40 a month.
- Thumbnl: try without signing in (watermarked looks, no download), then your first video free with both sizes to download. Then Creator $39 a month or $279 a year (30 videos a month). Studio $79 a month or $569 a year (150 videos a month).
The free method, start to finish
- Pause your video on the clearest frame: a face mid-reaction, or the object the video is about, big and sharp. Export that frame from your editor or take a full-resolution screenshot.
- Open it in a free editor. Make it 16:9 for a normal video or 9:16 for a Short. YouTube asks for at least 640 pixels wide and a JPG or PNG; on a phone the limit is 2 MB.
- Add three or four words, huge, in a color that stands off the background.
- Shrink it to phone size before you upload. Our free checker shows it at feed size and scores it: thumbnl.nohumannearby.com/check. The step-by-step version is at how to make a thumbnail from a frame of your video.
When paying is worth it
- Free is fine if you post a few times a month, enjoy designing, and do not post Shorts. The method above costs time, not money.
- Paying is worth a look if you post every week or more, post Shorts and long videos and need both sizes, or keep putting off the thumbnail until the last minute. Thumbnl turns a frame and three words into three finished designs in both sizes in about ten seconds.
- Pick the paid tool by what you need. Real frames from your own video: Thumbnl or Thumbmagic. Images you never filmed: Pikzels. See Pikzels alternative and Thumbmagic alternative.

What size should a free thumbnail be?
16:9 for a normal video and 9:16 for a Short, at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. YouTube's help page lists 2 MB as the limit when uploading from a phone.
